1ST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT-
To be a HOOD Scholar is an honor, privilege that I am grateful to have encountered. As a young woman that is engrossed in art, I'd never dreamt that a foundation would provide a scholarship so that I could attain a college degree to hone my craft as an artist.
I began doing Spoken Word when I was 12 years old and was amazed at the opportunities and heights that I could reach purely through art. I learned that my expertise lied in the discipline of communications, thus I earned a degree in Mass Communications from Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC. My emphasis was Television/ Film Production with a minor in Marketing. During my matriculation I produced and directed campus shows as the TV Station Manager. My writing and verbal communications skills improved dramatically and I was awarded a full merit scholarship to continue my studies at the University. My biggest accomplishment was producing and directing a short film entitled, "Acceptance", which told the story of a college student enduring homelessness while successfully earning a degree. The HOOD scholarship was a silent, but immaculate force that pushed me to go beyond my intended goals. The scholarship instilled that I could indeed overcome obvious destruction with constant hope. From constant transportation ,to assistance with applications for college to amazing mentorship, I can honestly state that the hope that HOOD envisioned shone brightly throughout my undergrad career.
I am now a professional freelance producer, script writer, camera operator, editor and production assistant. My primary job is working at The Weather Channel Headquarters in Atlanta, Ga. I have attained IMDB credit for camera operation on a feature film for independent production company, Signal 23. I teach video production and mentor students at Dunbar Elementary School in Mechanicsville, Atlanta, Ga. I am a proud scholar that is blessed to witness the blessings that God bestows when we believe that HOPE OVERCOMES OBVIOUS DESTRUCTION.
